However, lightning killed the WinTV a while ago, so I went back to my Homeworx, but that died rather quickly on its own. The setup was rather kludgy, but free of monthly fees and worked well enough. I eventually got Comskip set up so it would automatically jump the ads when watching stuff via a NextPVR client in Kodi.

I could watch the recordings over a shared network with a laptop connected to the TV.

Used NextPVR for free PSIP data and recordings. I switched to a Hauppauge WinTV-dualHD Dual TV Tuner connected via USB to my always-on PC and then recorded to a large external USB HDD. I eventually put a 1TB WD Green HDD in the DTVPal, but that has become unreliable and I have such a backlog of recorded junk I don't want to put a different HDD in there before watching some of it (after removing the HDD, you can't access the DTVPal's recordings via a normal PC like you can with the Homeworx). I also liked being able to connect the Homeworx recordings to a laptop via USB and then watch them at 1.5x or higher (good for rapidly getting through news/talk shows and another thing my DTVPal can't do). I got the Homeworx as a cheap test/novelty/overflow device that I didn't use too much, but it was handy to be able to record to different external USB disks as they got full, which my DTVPal can't do. Samsung discontinued the S5H1411, so I presume the newer HW180 had to go with a different chip (M-star).Ĭlick to expand.I've had a two-tuner DTVPal DVR for years as my primary recording device. The HW180 model has the same M-star CPU and Rafael silicon tuner, but uses an M-star MSB1237 demodulator chip in place of the Samsung. Overall Review: Chipsets: M-star MSD 7618 VLSI 128-pin CPU chip Samsung 6-th Generation S5H1411 demodulator chip, and Rafael 820T silicon tuner. The remote is a bit awkward to use at first: the buttons are arranged in an inconvenient layout but, like anything else, you get used to it. However, for this price point, a really good performer. I also have tested (2) HW180 boxes and encountered the same issues, but see "Other thoughts" section for specifics.īasically, if you have a strong input signal (greater than about -62 dBm) AND a good S/N ratio output from the tuner/demodulator (about 21-22 dB or greater), the unit will receive the channel (and hold it) perfectly. All 5 will lock to certain stations with ease, but the HW150 has trouble with the same ones. They all have different combination tuner/demodulator chipsets. Have tested it side-by-side with 2 integrated TVs (internal tuner/demodulator) and 2 ATSC set top receivers, and one USB stick receiver using the same antenna (outdoor 30-ft mast mounted with pre-amp). Very sensitive to signal level variations-has unusual reaction to combination of input level (in dBm) and tuner/demodulator signal-to-noise ratio: will lock to high S/N and low input combo AND to low S/N and high input level combo, but in between is sketchy. I've successfully repaired some old Zenith DTT901 converter boxes by replacing clearly bulging caps, but this dead Homeworx isn't giving me visual hints.Ĭons: Inconsistent reception quality: sometimes locks to stored channel when tuning, other times not. I agree that this isn't worth trying to repair. There's similar brown glue near the ribbon cable connectors. I don't think that leaked out of the capacitor. Mine has brown glue(?) all over near the large 22uF 400V "Sunicnn" capacitor which otherwise looks OK (not bulging at the top). Inside the little tuner part, the left Rafael Micro RT534 tuner chip is the same as yours but the circuit layout is a little different (diagonal surface-mount resistors in different locations, etc.) and my right chip is NM120AA while yours is a different Rafael Micro chip.

Mine has a Winbond chip and a Samsung chip. Internally, there's a round underlined "5" sticker, but I don't know if that means version 5 or is just some inspection sticker. Serial number is: HW-150PVR131008xxx (where xxx is three more numbers, no V or period) implying it was made in October of 2013.
